Our Roots

Our Roots

Every step we take, every song we sing, carries centuries of tradition, struggle, resilience and unwavering pride. This is our story.

A People of the Desert

Who Are the Kalbelia Gypsies?

The Kalbelia are one of Rajasthan's oldest nomadic communities — traditionally known as snake charmers of the Sapera lineage. For centuries they travelled across the vast deserts, reading the land like no one else, surviving with courage, wisdom and deep cultural knowledge.

Their dance, a living expression of their spirit, is inspired by the movements of the serpent — fluid, powerful and mesmerising. Recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Kalbelia tradition is more than art; it is their identity, their history and their way of life.

Often connected to the wider Romani (Gypsy) heritage, the community carries centuries of history, resilience and artistic expression — a culture built upon family, freedom and artistic excellence.

"For me, Gypsy is noble, gracious and sacred."

The Journey of

Sayari Sapera

Born into a family where tradition was not just taught but lived, Sayari Sapera grew up surrounded by the rhythms of the desert, the songs of her ancestors and the stories of a proud lineage. From a young age she showed a rare connection to the art — her movements natural, her voice soulful, her spirit fearless.

Her international journey began in 1995, gradually evolving into an artistic career spanning more than three decades. Through countless cultural exchanges, festivals and international productions, Sayari became recognised not only as a performer but as an ambassador of Rajasthan's living heritage.

She built one of Rajasthan's most respected performing ensembles — at its peak supporting around 40 musicians and performers — and dedicated years to empowering children and young people from rural villages through music and dance.

Her story is one of dedication, resilience and an unbreakable bond with her roots.
